My name is Susy and I am from California. I went to an incredible high school and “grew up” while attending a wonderful undergraduate and graduate institution. I’ve matured immensely while holding my position as a clinical research coordinator at a world-renown children’s hospital near home, and went through the highs and lows of two medical school application cycles. Through it all, I’ve had my family backing me up 1,000,000%, my wonderfully supportive boyfriend stand by my side, and gained life-long friends with beautiful ambitions and dreams.
And now? The University of Illinois College of Medicine has offered me a place in the incoming medical class and I have gladly accepted. Thank you for believing in me!
Some interesting things about me:
- I’ve spent some time in major cities (like Philadelphia, New York City, and most recently, Baltimore) doing everything from basic science research, to clinical research, to traveling, to academics.
- I traversed the country via bicycle (yes, on two wheels powered by my legs) with an incredible group of people dedicated to the fight against cancer. By the way, 4,000 miles can be traveled in 64 days.
- I am the proud mama of a loyal grey and white short-haired ‘”tuxedo” kitty named Liesl. Rest assured, she will be shamelessly featured in the years to come. She may even write a few entries for me.
I will try to be good about responding to comments and emails, but please keep in mind that I will sometimes be much too busy. Still, please comment if you like!

- To protect their privacy, the names, races, ages, and distinguishing features of all patients that may be mentioned in this blog will be changed. Any similarities that may occur is simply coincidence.
- In the interest of safety (because we all know that there are crazies out there), identifying features in pictures will be blurred/distorted.
- Do not let this blog be a source of health information that you abide by. I am simply a student who still knows nothing and write only what I see/hear/experience as it appears to me.
- Every entry is all opinion, so take everything I write about with a grain of salt.
- I’m not sure why I named my blog, “Dirt Roads and Flooded Paths,” but that is what it is for now. I guess I’ll figure it out later. I actually figured out a fitting name, as you can see! It has to do with family.
