There was a social held for the new incoming medical school class of 2014 today at a local place. I volunteered to shuttle people over and back so that they could drink if they wanted to and not have to worry about transportation or… err… poor choices. So question… why are people so awkwardly silent in the vans? And moreover, if they know that the driver is a fellow classmate just trying to help them have a better time, why don’t they talk to them on the drive over? I guess I’ll never know that one!
So on the first day I sat in the front of the auditorium and didn’t really get to scan the the new class. Today I got a chance to see a good majority of the class at the social, and what I saw was… well… a bit unexpected. For starters, this year’s class seems to be dominated by males. Probably what bothers me most is that the class is definitely lacking in diversity of both race and gender. What happened this year, UIC Admissions? What gives?
Anyhow, I am hoping that the rest of the year will not be so awkward as it was this evening. Hopefully it was just for tonight, but I noticed that most of the guys had already formed little cliques and it was very difficult to squeeze in and say hello. Come on people – like it or not, this is your class! These are the people you’ll be depending on for support and studying with for the next four years (at least). Start mingling! 🙂
